Putting it All Together

You'd probably think I'm pretty dumb when I tell you how long it took me to arrange these shelves. They were arranged, emptied, rearranged, and glared at for some time before I reached a level of happiness with how they looked. I've lived with them like this for about two weeks now, and I'm pleased with them at last. With the exception of the lower shelves (which you can't see in this photo), I feel done. Done-ish. I'm never truly done.

With that corner of the living room complete, I've been turning my attention to other parts. The wall over the piano was in desperate need of some artwork. After spackling and sanding and painting those walls, I wasn't keen on the idea of my usual eyeballing technique for hanging photos. So I spent an hour measuring, making mockups, making sure it was level, etc in  hopes of getting it right the first time.

And then I hung things:

It's a good start. I love these bird drawings my mom made me for Christmas. She can just go ahead and give me a drawing for every gift giving occasion, now that she's retired.

I got these frames from my stash of millions that I've collected from thrift stores over the years. I painted them the same shade as the wall and added a mat, which I had painted gray with craft paint.

These are two of my photographs. They may change. But for now, they're better than blankness.

And at last, thanks to a nice push from a two year old and a stomach virus, we have replaced the old dingy rug with this beauty from Target.

Ah, so lovely. I thought it best to go with something that starts out gray, since that's what all the rugs I buy seem to end up anyway. I admit I wasn't completely sure I'd be okay with the large pattern in the small space, but I love it. It adds interest and I don't feel cluttered at all.

Not bad progress, if you ask me. In two months we've gone from this:

To this:

Coming soon, we'll be working on the much awaited desk area and the tv area. I also have some more plans for art and paint. AND, Seth has eleven days off in a row coming up (well, at least from his full time job), so I'm making lists of things I'd like to tackle while he's home. Spoiler alert: demolition is involved. :)
